NEW HOME BLUES…

We first met our clients in their last home where we did a complete remodel and furnishings design. We were all quite excited when their last home we designed was featured on MarthaStewart.com!  Here is the home they just moved out of…

After 18 years of marriage, they decided to have kids after all!.. and all of a sudden their current home was too small!  and the white sofas had to go with little ones..

The “New House” was lovely but rather boring.. It’s was just a little bit of a shock after making a buying decision  from touring  a model home – when your new home is  delivered with all white walls and no “bells and whistles!”

We were called upon to tie it all together and add some much needed design love!

Our first task was to address the heart of the home – the kitchen and the family room.

We racked our brains to figure out what to do with the TV wall. Finally! the lightbulb moment appeared  and we said…If we JUST closed up that window, we would have SOOOO many more options!  The clients were open to it – so off we went creating our new design.

Next, we decided to add beams. our clients are from LA and they loved the  Spanish vibe seen in many homes there..

Gray Venetian plaster was done after the window was filled in to give the walls some interest. A custom cabinet  was built for the hundreds of little toys that come with toddlers!

For the stairway to the loft, we installed this bad boy! And it wasn’t easy!

The powder room was easy to remedy – Just a half wall of  tile, a new mirror and fixture did the trick.

In the Dining room, we added shiplap to the buffet wall! It was subtle and powerful at the same time! On the opposing wall an impactful wall mural by local artist Fernando Reyes.

Both of these treatments, were relatively quick and both made a huge difference.

Upstairs in the Master, we had the same issue. An ill placed window  on the bed wall was messing up our vibe!  It had to go and by closing it up, we were able to make this wall an impact wall with this moody sexy wallpaper.

Both of the rooms where we filled in the windows were quite bright with the remainder of the windows facing the “sunny side” – so we didn’t feel like we were giving  up anything by closing up the window.

The Entry benefitted from this beautiful wallpaper. We happen to LOVE wallpaper. This took less than an hour to install and what a difference!!!!

The last room we were asked to address was the kid’s  loft. The furniture was in place but again, it lacked interest. A simple graphic mural behind the TV, new pillows, poofs and art helped tremendously and lastly, the window valance. We find that window treatments are often forgotten about and they really tie a room together in a very simple way.

When you decide to decorate, don’t forget to look “outside the box” Just because the windows are ill placed doesn’t mean they have to stay there..  And architectural  treatments like beams can be manufactured to fit your space. We are excited about how this room turned out because it looks like the beams were always there!

Happy Decorating!..  and if you need help, you know where to find us!!
